Make up: What to use if you just starting out

There is a few people I ask for advice to make sure of my facts and when it comes to make up,I am always sure to contact Terri Lucks-Richards make-up artist.I am a huge make-up enthusiast but not close to being a make-up artist. This post will be in two parts.1.When to start introducing make-up into your daughters’ beauty regiment and what make-up products are best to start with and 2.Which make-up products to start using as an adult that hasn’t used make-up before but would like to.So basically essential products to have as your starter make-up kit as you become more  comfortable  with make-up you can then start building your collection.
Above are pics of Tamsen ( my creative assistant ; nails lol). It was a make-up look I did for her to show her ,how she can apply make-up without having to look like it’s cakes on.(the bottom pic appears a lot whiter than it actually was due to the SPF in the foundation, when a foundation has SPF in it reflects the light of the flash leaving you looking quite pale).
When is a good time to start introducing make- up into your daughters’ beauty regiment?
So this is a bit of a tricky question and is ultimately based on the parent/parents’ preference,as personally I would hold back up until my daughter actually ask/tells me that she would like to start wearing make-up(want my angel to be my baby for as long as I can have her, they grow up so quickly).
However I reckon that a good age would be at about 13 years old.
The first and most important products to purchase will be your skin care products, your cleanser, toner and moisturiser (Yardley has a great range for young skin) this is actually very important for everyone who wears make-up. Many people think that make-up causes pimples which is not true. The main cause of make-up related breakouts occur due to it the make-up not being removed properly.
Once that has been purchased I would recommend getting a bb cream, a lipgloss,a natural blush and mascara(this is always good to have).A good brand to use would be Essence they are manufactured in Germany  , affordable and aimed at teenagers, so it won’t mess up their skin.
Which make-up products to purchase as an adult that would like to start wearing make-up ; The starter kit.
Get a matte eyeshadow trio in neutral colours like taupe/brown, beige and maybe a darker colour for a smokey eye on a date night like dark blue or grey.
An eyeliner(Essence waterproof mascara is very nice and long lasting)
A mascara (Avon is nice as it is good quality and affordable)
A shimmer stick/bronzer for glow.
A nude lipstick(your own lip colour or slightly darker). And a red lipstick for a night out(Click here to see how to choose the perfect red for you)
A lovely blush (Ralo has a very nice , long lasting and good quality blushes and wide range of colours)
I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, please comment below and then i can answer your questions with a follow up post.

Pharrel Williams with Woolies

The twitterverse was a flutter today as news broke that Pharrell Williams will be teaming up with Woolworths on a new campaign or

So let me start off by saying that I am a big Pharrell Williams fan!Truly talented, wholesome, fresh and definetly a fashionista of note! The same can be said about Woolworths lol.
So over the past few months or so Pharrell has had a huge influence on pop culture here with his mounty hats and his cool style/”SWAG”.
Which I’m sure has played a big role on Woolworths choosing him for these campaigns(nothing confirmed wrt what kind of campaigns its going to be).
My question, however, as something else that has also been doing it’s rounds on the twitterverse is, should we be choosing international artists over our local artists’? See my previous blog post, , where AKA calls George Avakian out about Ace Hood’s perfomance at one of his events.
This isn’t the first time that Woolworths has used internationally famous people to be the face of one of their campaigns, they have previously used celebrities such as Victoria’s Secret Models Joan Smalls and Candice Swanepoel.Should we be un – Happy about this lol or should we hope that this will give a nice opening for South African Designers’ to work hand in hand with such a big name such as Pharrell Williams in the fashion business?

Pharrell Williams will be taking on the role of Style Director in collaboration across a series of sustainability-focused projects.

My interview with Kallie Kotze from Upstage Music

Hey everyone! So I know I have been neglecting you guys and I am so sorry,I just haven’t been finding the time to set up these interviews. SO if any of you have something that you starting or a project that you are busy with please do contact me and I will definitely set up a time and date with you.You will find my contact details in the contact section of the blog.

So her goes.

Tell me about yourself.

My name is  Kallie and  I’m the owner of Up-Stage Music. I’m a full time vocal coach and producer based in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.

How did it all start?

Well, music has always been my passion – since I was a child. I was 11 when I took up singing lessons with a reputable singing school in Cape Town. I competed in various competitions,  performed regularly with various artists and started composing and writing my own work from about the age of 17. I started giving part-time vocal tuition at the age of 19.

How long have you had the school?

This year marks the fifth anniversary of Up-Stage. Before my school I was working in the printing industry, but my heart wanted to open up a music school to teach, We’ve only grown from strength to strength.

How has your experience been so far?

Rocky, to say the least! Owning a business is definitely not for the faint of heart. I’ve discovered the most difficult part of my job is the admin!(Hinting for a personal assistant). The plus side is that I get to do what I love- teaching. There is nothing more rewarding than to see my students doing well, improving and living their dream.

What is the greatest challenge you have faced?

I would say competition. There are a large amount of singing schools in and around Cape Town each offering their own style of teaching. I firmly believe that in order for a vocalist to become great, they first need to believe in themselves. So many artists fail in our industry due to lack of confidence or people walking over them, not giving them the chance to raise an opinion of what they are doing and why. Also, a big challenge is of course to offer students enough exposure. It is not always apt to have them perform in a pub! Family friendly venues are very difficult to find.

What advice would you give to others, who would like to start their own business?

Do your homework! I hear of so many business owners that just jump into a venture without thinking things through. I also feel that you need a passion for what you do. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it!You can!

How many of your students have gone on to be stars?

I currently have two stars that are touring Belgium as we speak! One of these students, Karla Christine, has also just released her second commercial album. Furthermore. I have had a few students that’s gone on to starting bands and gigging around Cape Town, becoming successful session vocalists for reputable SA acts and even a few students that have ventured into acting and has appeared in a few SA films and commercials.

What’s next for your school?

To grow, to dream and to keep singing! It’s a tough economy. I offer affordable singing lessons as I would never want to deprive anyone of not being able to afford living a dream! I am currently in the process of going a bit more mainstream with recording artists’ demo’s.I feel that there are a large amount of recording studio’s in Cape Town that offers their services to a selected few. What I mean by this is that the recording a song is expensive. I would like to be able to offer high quality recording at a fraction of the cost!I feel that every singer deserves to be able to afford a demo CD!

Kallie will be hosting Up-Stage Summer Concert on the 28th March. For more info lick on the link for all event details Up-Stage Summer Concert.

AKA and George Avakian twitter war

I was scrolling through my twitter feed earlier and came across, something interesting.

@akaworlwide and @georgeavakian going at it,about an event, that it seems was planned by George head ining international artist Ace Hood.
It looked as first as AKA  had a valid point in pointing out that we put too much spotlight on international artists and not enough on our local artist.
Then George replied to the effect of AKA having sour grapes for not being a part of the event.
AKA then replies with a DM that was sent by George offering him 25K to perform at the event.
See the exchange between the two below ;

What do you think? Was this beef just created to get some publicity for the events AKA and George have planned for this weekend or is it for real?Sound off in the comments below
AKA will be performing at the Miss South Africa event on Sunday 29th March and George at the Maboneng event on the 28th(My birthday!)

Gold and White or is it Black and Blue?

When my creative assistant is around aka Tamsen we are always getting up to the cute things in life.

So yesterday I was in the mood for a clean, fresh look and while browsing on  She Found , we came across this awesome look.

So to get this precious mani you will need the following items.(If you want to know how to get hold of this striping paper just leave me a comment in the comments section)

We started with a base coat of clear nail polish, then we used the white nail polish over the whole nail, applied the gold to my wedding finger as an accent nail and used the striping paper for the lines.
Hope you have fun trying out this look, please tag / link back tome should you try it out for yourself.

Cynthia Morgan Music Video shoot

I am currently suffering from death by sunburn, but am pleased to be able to share my experience of me being a special(extra) on the a music video for Cynthia Morgan a sassy, fun, sexy and down to earth lady dubbed by me as the first lady of Hip Hop in Africa.

I was browsing through my Facebook feed Saturday evening and came across one very special post calling all dancers and extra’s that are interested in being in a music video and obviously I was, thankfully I was off and I’m never off (I sadly work every weekend).
Sunday morning was a rush to get done as our call time was at 8am,our outfits were to be inspired by Rihanna’s shut up and drive video so off I went with my denim shorts tight top and 3 PAIRS OF HEELS as well as some extra shorts to wear if the one I was wearing didn’t suit the wardrobe requirements, the reason why I have placed emphasis on the heels was because when we got to the set the director wanted us all to wear takkies for the shoot(BOL,typical of me to be a dwank lol),luckily for me we had the awesome Tracy Rosslind (stylist/casting director) that would go to the ends of the earth to make sure that all goes well with the shoot, that even took her boots off so that everything would be 100%.
The experience I had was amazing from jumping off cars to chatting to superstars and just gaining so much knowledge from everything made me so humble and appreciative And i can’t be more grateful for it.
However this has definitely taught me a few lessons.
1.Always wear sunblock!Days on set are long and you don’t know what the weather is going to be(it’s Cape Town so we have four seasons in one day).If you don’t this will be the aftermath.(See Pic Below)

 2. Always make sure that you have one of each type of item so flats, heels or takies(shoes)
     tight top,loose top,long top or crop top(top)

Below is a bunch of pics of the awesome time we had on location.

I was messing around on the internet the other day and found something cool I would like to share with you guys.

For those of you that follow my blog regularly knows;

1. I’m always pushing for that number one spot
2. I’m not the richest chicka out there

Above are some pics of the most coolest, sophisticated genuine leather bags(they use only the finest premium Italian leather which adds longevity to their bags and accessories) namely;Mens Paolo 2 Briefcase, Womens’ Fiorella Work Bag and Womens’ Medolla L Handbag.I have seen in quite a while, normally when I think of a briefcase the first thing that comes to mind are those olden time briefcases with those combination locks(not sure if that is what they call it) that my dad used to work when he was still working in an office(he has since ’97 been part of Club CEO,one of my main motivators) he now uses one for his nails(hardware ones,no weird fetishes) and the other for his important things as these briefcases are now totally out of fashion and out dated below is a pic of one if you can’t remember the horrondouseness (is that even a word, lol) that is the antique briefcase.

If you feel blindness coming to mind at the sheer sight of this briefcase please head on over to the Maxwell Scott bags sight and get a dose of anti-venom by checking out all the different bags and briefcases they have on offer.
Maxwell Scott is an online store based in the UK(e-commerce) they don’t have any store at the moment but do ship to South Africa(yipee)!
I can’t wait to get my hand s on my own one and swag it out like the Boss Lady I know I am…
These bags ooze style, class and sexiness I can just imagine how I would feel walking around with a Maxwell Scott bag or accessory.Go on be a trendsetter!
